With a Tent Through the Land of the Vikings – Camping Treasure Map of Norway

As you certainly know from our previous articles, Scandinavia is an ideal place for camping style lovers. This time we will focus on Norway – the Viking country! Like the rest of Scandinavia, Norway has the allemannsretten right – the right to move and camp freely within public areas. This means that we can crash with the tent practically anywhere, but we must remember to maintain the basic principles of respect for nature and private properties. It is a privilege that opens up unlimited possibilities for travelers to discover new, unique places!

What places for camping?

If you like a warmer climate and beautiful beaches, head for the southern coast of Norway, with the Sørlandet region at the forefront. Camps around Kristiansand and Mandal are an excellent starting point for exploring charming white towns and Norwegian coastlines.

Going west, we will reach the land of fjords. Stavanger, Bergen and Ålesund are real pearls, where campsites are often located on the slopes of the mountains, offering amazing views of deep, blue bays. And Sognefjord and Geirangerfjord, which are registered on the UNESCO list, will surely delight even the most demanding travelers!

The central part of the country, Jotunheimen – Land of Giants – is a real paradise for trekking enthusiasts. The pitching of a tent under the highest peaks of Norway, Galdhøpiggen or Glittertind, is an experience that will definitely remain in our memory for a long time. The campsites here are often equipped with saunas. It will be an ideal way to rest and regenerate after a day full of mountain hiking 😉

Northern Norway, on the other hand, is a kingdom of the aurora and the sun, which does not set in summer. Campsites in and around Tromsø, Lofoten and Nordkapp offer a unique camping experience. Imagine reading a book under the northern sunlight at midnight, or watching the aurorae directly from your tent. I think it will be a unique experience!!!

If you are a Viking lover, the ideal place is the vicinity of Oslo and Oslofjord, a true treasure trove of historical sites. Camping sites near the Viking Ship Museum or the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History allow us to combine close contact with Norwegian nature with learning about the interesting past of this region.

If you plan a camping trip to Norway, remember about the changing weather conditions. Even in summer, temperatures can drop significantly, especially in the mountains or in the north of the country. A good tent, a sleeping bag adapted to lower temperatures and waterproof equipment are the basis of a successful expedition.

For those who prefer a bit more amenities (like me 🙂 Norway offers well-equipped campsites with access to electricity, warm showers and kitchens. Many of them also have characteristic hytte – wooden houses, which are perfect instead of a tent in case of bad weather. Norway is the country that gets to know each other slowly, without haste, stopping in every place of interest. And our camping trip through this area will certainly be the only unique adventure!!!
