Ryanair Is Changing Key Rules: Passengers With Checked Bags Will Need to Arrive Earlier.

If you frequently fly with budget airlines, you know how crucial it is to keep up with their ever-evolving rules. Ryanair has just announced a major change that affects anyone traveling with checked luggage. Starting this November, the airline is significantly cutting the time window for dropping off checked bags at the airport. Arriving even a few minutes late could mean missing your flight altogether.

Here is exactly what you need to know.

New Cut-off Time: Bags Must Be Dropped 60 Minutes Before Departure
The main change centers on when the bag drop (check-in) counters close. Under the new policy, which takes effect on November 10, 2026:

  • Old rule: You could check in your bags up to 40 minutes before departure.
  • New rule: Counters will close exactly 60 minutes before scheduled takeoff.

This gives travelers 20 minutes less leeway to wrap up their airport formalities. For example, if your flight is set for 3:00 PM, your luggage must be checked in by 2:00 PM at the very latest. Simply seeing the plane still parked at the gate won’t help—once the counter closes, no more bags will be accepted.

Why Is Ryanair Making This Change?
The airline states the move is designed to make the airport experience smoother and less stressful. Ryanair’s Marketing Director, Dara Brady, explained that giving passengers an extra 20-minute buffer helps ensure they have ample time to navigate the rest of the airport without rushing through:

  • Security checks
  • Passport control
  • Getting to the departure gate on time

The decision comes on the heels of a tough period for European airports, where the recent rollout of the new EES (Entry/Exit System) led to massive queues and, in some unfortunate cases, people missing their flights. Closing bag drop counters earlier is meant to prevent similar chaos, especially during peak travel times.

Who Does This Actually Affect?
While the new rule sounds strict, it won’t impact every traveler in the same way:

  • Carry-on only travelers: You won’t notice much of a difference. Once you check in online, you can head straight to security as usual. Since roughly 80% of Ryanair passengers travel with just hand luggage, the vast majority of people won’t be affected.
  • Travelers with checked bags: For the remaining 20%, this is a big deal. It means adjusting your habits and arriving at the airport with extra time to spare—especially during holidays, summer breaks, and busy long weekends.

The Takeaway
The advice for your next trip is simple: if you’re flying Ryanair with a checked suitcase, do not leave the bag drop until the last minute!
