This coming summer could be a tough one for travelers in Europe. With the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, jet fuel prices are soaring and supplies are running low. Experts are warning that we could see real shortages in the coming weeks, leading to delays and cancellations right in the middle of the vacation rush.
Flight canceled due to fuel shortages? Here’s what you need to know.

On top of that, new EU border control systems are causing massive lines. Some passengers are even missing their flights because of the wait, even when they show up at the airport well ahead of time.
What are the airline’s responsibilities?
If your flight gets canceled, the airline can’t just leave you hanging. They have to give you two main options:
- A full refund for your ticket.
- A replacement flight as soon as possible.
If they notify you of the cancellation less than two weeks before your departure, you might also be eligible for extra compensation. The amount usually depends on how far you were supposed to fly.
Support at the airport
If you’re stuck waiting at the airport due to a cancellation or a long delay, the airline is required to take care of you. This includes:
- Food and drinks.
- Access to phone calls or emails.
- Hotel accommodation (if your new flight is the next day) and transport between the airport and the hotel.
Package deals vs. DIY travel
How much protection you have depends on how you booked your trip.
- Package Holidays: You’re in the best position here. The tour operator is responsible for the whole trip. If your flight is scrapped, they have to find you an alternative of similar quality, give you a full refund, or make sure you get home safely.
- Booking separately: If you booked your flight and hotel yourself, it’s a bit riskier. While the airline will refund your ticket, the hotel might not give you your money back for the missed nights, as your contract with them is still technically valid.
How to protect yourself
With so much uncertainty lately, keep these two things in mind:
- Travel Insurance: A good policy can cover extra costs that the airline won’t, like prepaid hotels or car rentals.
- Pay by Credit Card: In some cases, your bank can help you get your money back through a “chargeback” if a service you paid for wasn’t provided.
Knowing your rights is half the battle. Even when things get chaotic globally, being prepared means you’re much more likely to handle the stress and still enjoy your time off.
