Spring to Norway

Many people decide to go to Norway in the summer – July and August – when it is the most sunny. But is it worth waiting for the trip until summer? In our opinion, no and it is a great choice to go in the spring!

It is true that the tourist season in Norway starts quite late, because in the second half of June, but if you want to feel the true magic of Scandinavia, you must definitely come here in May or June, when the Norwegian spring lasts!

Why spring?

Probably many of you will ask why it is worth coming to Norway in the spring when the season is not yet and it is not yet warm. In our opinion, May and June is the best time to travel to the land of fjords. Then the mountain peaks are still covered with snow, and the valleys are covered with fresh greenery. Waterfalls are then the most impressive, and mountain rivers and streams full of melting snow water. In some places, you can even see ice drifting, which adds to this landscape an unusual charm.

Where to in the spring

Since spring is the fastest in the south, we recommend to go to Stavanger, Oslo or Bergen in spring. In May and June, roads along the coast and fjords are already passable. If you are going on a camper trip yourself, it is worth remembering that individual sections through mountain passes are only opened in mid-June. If you wait to open roads through mountain passes, you will have a unique opportunity to ride through the snow-hollowed tunnels of the Snow Road – Aurlandsvegen or Road No. 55 – Sognefjellsvegen.

A great idea during our spring trip will be a cruise on the fjords. While in Norway by car you can go on a sea trip between Stavanger and Bergen (ferries Fjord Line). From May, a beautiful cruise by car ferry from Gudvangen to Kaupanger will also start. If you are going to the fjords by plane, you can spend a weekend in Stavanger with a cruise around Lysefjord. Since the beginning of May, Bergen has offered touring trips to Hardangerfjord to Eidsdal, and cruises to Sognefjord as far as Flåm, from where you can return by train or bus.

Near Ålesund lies the island of Runde, called the island of the masconurs – birds with an orange beak 😉 In spring they come to the cliffs to raise their young. From May to the end of June, we can watch them return to their nests in the evenings. Believe the word, only for this view it is worth going to Norway in the spring!

What to know when going to Norway in the spring?

When planning a trip to Norway in the spring, remember that in April or May ferries and other means of transport run less often than in the season. There are also not many campsites in operation, and museums have limited opening hours. Therefore, you need to spend more time on planning your trip and carefully check all the information, preferably on websites. It is also worth being prepared for the morning frosts. In the Norwegian mountains, the ski season lasts until May. If you need good and proven clothing for such a trip, please visit https://www.outnorth.com.  here you will find everything you need.

But we also have good news for those planning to leave in the spring! Accommodation prices at many campsites are much lower in the spring, even by 30%! Similarly, travel agency offers are also slightly cheaper than during the summer. Therefore, going north in the spring you will see fjords, when nature awakens from winter sleep, and additionally at prices lower than in summer.
