Traveling to the UK has been a straightforward formality for years, but that is all about to change. Starting April 2, 2025, strict new border control rules will come into effect, catching thousands of travelers off guard. Missing just one specific document could mean you are refused boarding before you even reach the gate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A British passport is now a must<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n


The biggest shift affects dual nationals. From April 2025, British citizens will no longer be allowed to enter the UK using only a foreign passport (such as a Polish one). Until now, many travelers used their EU passports for convenience, but those days are over. During check-in and border control, you will now be required to present either a valid British passport or a Certificate of Entitlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why a Polish passport is no longer enough: The ETA system<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n


It all comes down to the introduction of the ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation). This is a digital entry permit costing \u00a310, which will be mandatory for all travelers who do not currently need a visa (including Polish citizens living in Poland).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This creates a major trap for dual citizens:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Airline systems will require every passenger traveling on a Polish passport to have a digital ETA linked to it.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • However, a British citizen cannot apply for an ETA because the system will automatically reject applications from anyone who already holds British citizenship.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • As a result, if you try to check in with a Polish passport, the airline will find no ETA on file. Under the new regulations, they will be forced to deny you boarding to avoid heavy financial penalties.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n

    The exception for Irish citizens<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n


    It is worth noting that these rules do not affect Irish citizens in the same way. Thanks to the Common Travel Area agreement, Irish nationals are exempt from the ETA requirement and can continue to travel to the UK using their Irish passports. This change primarily impacts citizens of other EU countries, including the hundreds of thousands of Poles who have taken up British citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The high cost of being unprepared<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n


    If your British passport has expired, renewing it costs \u00a394.50 (for a standard adult document applied for online). However, that is a bargain compared to the alternative: the Certificate of Entitlement. This is a vignette placed in a foreign passport to prove your right of abode in the UK, and it currently costs between \u00a3589 and \u00a3650.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
